Turning Our Library Into a Homeschool Classroom
My husband and I set aside an area for a “library” when we moved into our new house. Granted, it’s just a small section off of the living room with bookcases, a reading nook, and an empty “library” desk, but I find that official titles (like library) make things seem more, well, official.
The kids have loved the idea of the library all along, and now are in for another surprise: we’re turning the library into a library / homeschool classroom!
This all came about when we realized what a hard time our school-aged kids were having doing school at home, especially since they have both been in public school. It’s not that “school-like” to do your work at the dining room table, in the living room, or in a bedroom.
That’s when my husband and I realized the problem and perfect solution. The problem was one of structure: the kids need a dedicated space just for school that isn’t used for other things. The solution was to create a real classroom in our house.
I’ve ordered mini desks and chairs for the students. We also ordered large bulletin boards from a school wholesaler so that we can transform the walls of the classroom into real bulletin boards. I’ve moved all of our Creation Station and other crafting supplies into the classroom. The school supplies and books have also been relocated. Books have been moved into slide out tubs on the bookshelves by category (level 1 and level 2 easy readers, chapter books, historical fiction, etc.).
Once the classroom is finished, I’ll be posting pictures along with the details of how we put it together frugally so that we got the most classroom for the lowest price. I was able to scavenge a lot of the organizational tools from our garage sale stuff waiting to be sold in the garage!
In keeping with our family’s minimalist lifestyle, the homeschool classroom is also minimalist. We’ve got only what is needed, everything is organized and labeled, and all items have a specific home.
Have you set up a homeschool classroom in your home? What are the special sections and details in your homeschool classroom? Let us know in the comments below.

I don’t home school – I would if I could (single Mom).
We have a library too.
My house has a room that’s been added on – it’s not up to building code so it can’t be a bedroom (someday when more important stuff is fixed it’ll get done). The room doesn’t have insulation so it’s cold or muggy depending on the season but with no windows and my stained glass lamps on, it’s a cozy little room with a very soft sofa, three huge 7or 8ft book cases overflowing with all sorts of books and reference materials. If I have time this summer, I’m going to make labels of some sort for the shelves so my son knows what subject is where…
I work for a school system so I grab reference books, that are still useful, when the librarians clean out & that’s helped with my son’s homework and the official-ness of the room. My parents had a room at the top of our staircase designated as a library when I was a kid and it was always nice to go up there and read or rifle through their books so I kinda continued the tradition.
I think every home should have a library spot to keep stories & knowledge. While yes, there’s always the internet, books know no power outage, they don’t change their content(so you can always find the same info in the same spot) & their servers never go down 🙂
